DTF Printing for Apparel: Answering Your Top Questions

You’ve done your research on DTF printing for apparel, and you’re finally ready to buy a DTF printer.

While you know what to expect, finding solid, nuanced answers to technical questions can be challenging. Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place. We are going to answer the most common questions we get asked by new business owners.

What We Cover in This Guide:

  • Longevity: How long does a print last?
  • Cost: What is the real cost per shirt?
  • Materials: Can you print on any fabric?
  • Business: Is it actually profitable?
  • Artwork: How to prepare files for print.

1. How Long Does a DTF Print Last On a Shirt?

The lifespan of a print depends heavily on washing conditions, but here are the numbers under normal care:

A DTF print typically lasts 50-100 washes.

Under ideal conditions, this translates to one to two years of regular weekly use and washing without significant fading or cracking. This rivals traditional screen printing durability.

2. How Much Does DTF Cost Per Shirt?

The short answer: Approximately $0.69 per transfer.

However, seeing is believing. Watch the video below where we perform a real-time simulation using actual products, supplies, and equipment to calculate the exact cost.

3. How Durable is a DTF Print?

Direct-to-Film prints are extremely durable.

Because the ink binds with the special adhesive powder and cures into the fabric, the print is flexible. It stretches with the garment rather than cracking. With proper application, you will not see peeling or flaking, maintaining vibrant colors for the life of the garment.

4. Can DTF Be Used On Any Fabric?

One of the biggest advantages of DTF over other methods (like DTG or Sublimation) is versatility. You can apply transfers to almost anything, including:

  • 100% Cotton
  • Polyester & 50/50 Blends
  • Nylon
  • Denim
  • Treated Leather
  • Linen & Rayon
  • Dark & Light Fabrics

5. Is DTF Printing Profitable?

Yes. Because the cost of goods is low (under $1.00 per print) and the perceived value of custom apparel is high, the margins are significant.

Beyond t-shirts, you can expand your profit centers by printing on high-ticket items like:

  • Jackets and Hoodies
  • Backpacks and Bags
  • Hats (using smaller prints)
  • Sports Uniforms

If you niche down (e.g., custom fishing gear or corporate branding), your profit margins can grow even higher.

6. How Do I Prepare Artwork for DTF?

Garbage in, garbage out. The quality of your file determines the quality of your print.

The Golden Rule: Use Vectors.
Whenever possible, design in Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or similar software. Vector files can be scaled indefinitely without pixelation.

If you must use raster images (like photos in Photoshop), ensure they are at least 300 DPI and have a transparent background.
