Modern Puff Embroidery takes this further by actually raising the design off the base fabric using foam. Almost any design can take on new excitement when you add an extra dimension.

Step-by-Step: It’s All About Layering

Sold in a wide range of colors, foam backing is easy to match to your thread color. Enclosed designs (like circles or block letters) work best.

Follow these steps to achieve the perfect 3D look:

1. Adjust Density: The top layers of the design need to be denser than standard embroidery—almost double the average. Adjust your commercial embroidery machine software to increase stitch density.
2. Prep the Underlay: Stitch any fill areas that precede the satin "puff" areas first.
3. Place the Foam: Before the machine begins the satin stitches, stop it and place a piece of foam over the design area. (Tip: Use a tiny amount of embroidery spray adhesive to keep it in place).
4. Stitch the Cap: Sew the satin layer over the foam. The needle penetrations will perforate the foam, making it easy to remove later.
5. Remove Excess: Once finished, carefully pull off the excess foam. If digitized correctly, the edges should tear away cleanly like a perforated stamp.
6. Finishing Touch: Remove any stray "hairs" of foam by hovering a heat gun over the design (or using a pressing cloth and iron). The heat will shrink the foam bits until they disappear.
