Know What Has to Happen Between Print and Press

A DTF printer is only the first part of the job. The design still has to move from artwork to film, through adhesive and curing, and finally to the heat press. If you are comparing machines, that whole path matters because it determines how the equipment fits your space, your staff, and the kind of orders you want to produce.

Once you understand the workflow, the printer choices get easier. You can compare systems around the amount of work you expect to run, how much of the powdering and curing process you want connected to the printer, and how you plan to move finished transfers to the press.

START WITH THE CORE IDEA

DTF Makes the Transfer First. The Garment Comes Later.

The image is printed onto transfer film with color ink and a white layer. Adhesive powder is applied to the printed area, then heat cures the adhesive so the transfer is ready for the press.

The garment does not have to be standing next to the printer when the transfer is made. Prepared transfers can be pressed after they are produced, which gives a shop more freedom to separate transfer production from final garment decoration.

FROM FILE TO FINISHED GARMENT

Five Steps Every DTF Job Has to Move Through

The equipment can change. The job still has to move through the same basic stages before the garment is finished.

Set Up the Artwork

Prepare the design for production and send it to the DTF printer so the transfer can be built on film.

Print the Design to Film

The design is printed onto transfer film with color ink plus a white layer that supports the graphic when it is pressed to the garment.

Apply the Adhesive Powder

Adhesive powder is applied to the printed area, and excess powder is removed before the transfer moves into curing.

Cure the Printed Transfer

Heat cures the adhesive on the printed transfer. In an inline commercial setup, the film can move through a shaker and heater system as part of the production line.

Press the Garment

Position the prepared transfer on the garment and press it using the time, temperature, and pressure specified for that transfer and film.

The basic DTF process stays the same. What changes is whether powdering and curing happen as separate hands-on steps or are connected to printing in an inline system.

What does a manual DTF workflow look like?

The film comes off the printer before adhesive is applied and cured as a separate step. After cooling, the finished transfer can be stored or moved to the heat press.

What changes with an inline system?

Printed film can move from the printer into a shaker and heater system, keeping powdering and curing connected to the printing stage before the prepared transfer material is collected.

Why does white ink matter?

The white layer sits behind the color image. On dark garments, it gives the color inks an opaque base so the design stays visible after pressing.

Do the garments need pretreatment first?

Garment pretreatment is generally not required for DTF. That removes a preparation step before the transfer is pressed to the garment.

The Printer Starts the Transfer. The Rest of the Line Finishes It.

A complete DTF workflow has to account for film, ink, adhesive powder, curing, and a heat press. The printer creates the image, but the transfer is not ready for a garment until the rest of that process is complete.

The printer builds the design on film with color ink and a white layer that helps the graphic stay visible on light or dark garments.

Add Adhesive and Cure It

Adhesive powder is applied to the printed area and then heated so the transfer is ready for final application. Depending on the system, powdering and curing can be separate steps or part of an inline workflow.

Press the Garment When the Order Is Ready

The prepared transfer is positioned on the garment and pressed using the time, temperature, and pressure required for the transfer and film being used.
