Understanding the Process
The DigitalHeat FX EZ Peel Hard Surface transfer paper is specially formulated for hard goods that are dark, light, or opaque. Unlike sublimation, which requires polymer-coated blanks, this paper allows you to print on almost anything.
⚠️ A Note on Durability:
Hard goods vary in chemical composition. In general, porous surfaces (wood, unglazed ceramic) hold the transfer better than slick, non-porous surfaces (glass, glazed mugs). Slick surfaces may require "baking" to cure fully (see Step 4).
Step-by-Step Application Instructions
🛑 Preparation: The Oven
Before you print, preheat your convection oven to 375°F.
(You will need this for the final curing step to ensure scratch resistance!)
Step 1: Printing 🖨️
1. Load the EZ Peel Hard Surface paper into the Multi-Purpose Tray of your printer.
Tip: The coated, glossy side should be FACE UP.
2. Open Print Optimizer and select the print mode: Hard Surface Paper.
3. Ensure your paper size is set to 11x17 (Tabloid) and press PRINT.
Step 2: The Transfer (Heat Press) 🔥
CRITICAL TOOL: You must use a Silicone Mat. This ensures pressure is distributed evenly and prevents the hard substrate from cracking or damaging the transfer.
- Check Pressure: Place your substrate (mug, wood, etc.) on the bottom platen. Place the silicone mat on top. Close the press to adjust pressure before applying heat.
- Position: Place your printed transfer onto the substrate. Cover with the silicone mat.
- Press: Heat apply using the chart below as a guide.

Note: Non-porous items like metal or glass should be cleaned with alcohol/mineral spirits before pressing to remove oils.
Step 3: The Peel (Cold!) ❄️
Remove the item from the press and place it in a safe area to cool down completely. You must peel this paper COLD. If you peel while warm, the toner will stay on the paper, not your item.
Step 4: The Finish (Baking) ⏲️
To make the item durable and scratch-resistant, you must cure the toner.
- Ensure your oven is at 375°F.
- Place your peeled, finished item into the oven.
- Bake Time: Bake for half the time you used in the press step.
Example: If you pressed Wood for 90 seconds, bake it for 45 seconds. If you pressed Metal for 2 minutes, bake for 1 minute.
Troubleshooting & Pro Tips 💡
A hard surface transfer is bonded to the surface, not dyed into it. This means physical abrasion can damage the print if not treated with care.
- ⏳ The 24-Hour Rule: Give all decorated items 24 hours to cure before heavy handling or washing.
- 🧼 Hand Wash Only: Mugs and drinkware should be hand washed. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or dishwashers.
- ☀️ Sun Exposure: Items left permanently outdoors will fade over time.
- 🌡️ Temperature Control: If the paper sticks to your substrate during the peel, you likely pressed too hot. Reduce the temperature by 10-20 degrees and try again.
- 🧪 Test, Test, Test: Not all wood is the same; not all glass is the same. Expect to sacrifice a few blanks to dial in your perfect settings.
