Follow this guide to master the process, ensuring professional durability and scratch resistance every time.
Step 1: Printer Settings 🖨️
Correct print settings are crucial for the toner to adhere to the foil properly. Use the settings below based on your specific printer model.
- Paper Media: Transparency, Film, or Foil
- Tray: Multi-Purpose Tray / Single Sheet Feeder
- Image Mode: Mirror Image
- Print Side: Print on the Matte side of the Colored "A" Film (Do not print on the glossy side).
- B&W Laser Printers: 100% Black (Increase density if possible).
- CMYK Printers: 400% Composite Black (C:100, Y:100, M:100, K:100).
-
Crio/OKI 8432WT & 9541WT:
- For Neon Colors: Print 100% White.
- For Metallic Colors: Print 400% Composite Black.
Step 2: The Marrying Process (A + B Paper)
This is where you bind the adhesive to your design. Precision is key here!
- Heat Press Prep: Set your press to 260-275°F with Medium-High pressure. Pre-heat the lower platen by closing it for 90-120 seconds.
-
Layering:
- Place a protective sheet on the lower platen.
- Place the "A" Paper (Printed Film) face up.
- Place the "B" Paper (White Paper) face down on top (Yellow letters facing you).
- Cover: Cover the stack with 5 sheets of regular copy paper. (This slows the heat transfer for an even marry).
-
Press:
- 90 Seconds for 8.5” x 11” paper.
- 120 Seconds for 11” x 17” paper.
Open the press. While the papers are still flat on the HOT platen, rub the stack with a cloth for 5 seconds to ensure grip.
DO NOT LET IT COOL. Peel the "B" paper back in a slow, low, fluid motion without stopping. Do not lift the paper off the platen while peeling.
Check your transfer: Your design should now be covered in white adhesive. Trim the white coating frame from all four edges with scissors.
Step 3: Transfer to Garment (The Application) 👕
Now that your transfer is married, it's time to apply it to the product.
- Pre-Press: Place your garment on the press and press for 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- Position: Place your transfer onto the substrate (Adhesive/Print side down).
- Press: Cover with a silicone sheet and press using the settings in the chart below.
Application Settings Chart
| Substrate | Temp (°F) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton | 275 - 310°F | 30 Sec |
| Polyester | 265 - 285°F | 30 Sec |
| Polypropylene | 220°F | 20 Sec |
| Paper/Cardboard | 220°F | 15 Sec |
Remove the product from the heat press. IT MUST COOL COMPLETELY.
Once the shirt is room temperature, roll the film back to reveal your design. If you peel while warm, the foil will not stick.
Step 4: Finishing (The Fix)
To ensure washability and durability, you must seal the transfer.
- Place the shirt back on the press.
- Cover with a silicone or parchment sheet.
- Press for 30 seconds (Heavy Pressure).
Note: You will notice the transfer changes from High Gloss to Matte. This indicates the design is properly embedded into the fabric fibers.
Troubleshooting & Pro Tips 💡
- Practice First: Print several small designs on one sheet and test them on scrap fabric before committing to a full job.
- Adhesive Issues? If you aren't getting an even coating of white adhesive during the marrying step, reduce your temperature by 5°F and peel slower.
- Avoid Seams: Do not place the transfer near collars, seams, or pockets. The uneven pressure will cause the foil to flake.
- Care Instructions: Tell your customers to wash cold (inside out) and air dry for the best longevity.
- Tape It Up: Use thermal tape to hold your stack of 5 copy sheets together. It makes the workflow much faster!
